Hello!

I am an ecologist, climate scientist, and writer whose work bridges science and storytelling. Some of the world’s most important stories are hidden in quiet landscapes — in bogs, wetlands, smoke, moss, and ancient layers of earth. Through research, fieldwork, and creative nonfiction, I explore the hidden ecosystems shaping our planet’s past, present, and future.

My Story

Thirty years ago, I was a passionate young environmentalist looking for a career that blended science, policy, and creativity. After stumbling into research projects in northern Canada, I fell in love simultaneously with science and boggy landscapes—and never looked back.  I feel extremely fortunate to be an educator, mentor, and ecologist, studying peatlands across the globe—ecosystems that preserve ancient carbon, shape climate systems, and reveal profound stories about the relationship between people and landscapes.

I have published almost 200 scientific articles in international journals, and have contributed my expertise and leadership to several exciting research networks that unite scientists around the globe.  My creative writing blends scientific insight with narrative nonfiction to illuminate the hidden worlds beneath our feet.  My goal in research, writing, and speaking engagements is to help people learn about and fall in love with bogs.  Please join our wonderful community of people who care about bogs and natural landscapes, and want to preserve them for future generations.

My core values are deep respect and reverance for the scientific method. While not perfect, science corrects its mistakes over time, and is based on curiosity as much as technical skills. Through my science communication and art, I hope to inspire others about the power and beauty of science. I bring passion, great enthusiasm, and warmth to my projects and speaking engagements.
